Who's Who in American Comedy

Carol Burnett

Broadway actress and comedian who starred in her own TV show from 1967 to 1978. She credits Lucille Ball as a role model and influence on her career. The networks were reluctant to giver the show because they didn't think a woman could lead a variety program, but the show was very popular and helped the careers of Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner, Vicki Lawrence, and Tim Conway. Parody was one of the common features of the show; the clip below is a take-off on the film Gone With the Wind.
