Arquette (grandfather of Patricia, Rosanna, Alexis [formerly Robert], and David), was a performer in radio, theatre, and film who retired in 1956, but when he heard his name mentioned on the Tonight Show (by the host, Jack Paar) he came up with the character of Charley Weaver (wearing a squashed hat, little round glasses, rumpled shirt, broad tie, baggy pants and suspenders) from the fictional Mount Idy and began making appearances on the show and elsewhere. He may be most famous for his appearance on The Hollywood Squares. The following clip describes the history of the Tonight Show; 5:12 minutes into it there's a short bit with "Charley Weaver."
