Richard Pryor

African-American comedian; controversial because of his use of obscenities; first African-American comic to maintain his 'roots' but appeal to whites; moved into films, starring in "Which Way is Up" and "Blue Collar" and in supporting roles in "Silver Streak" and "California Suite." Here's a clip from one of his routines; be aware of the use of 'foul language' and notice how it's simply a part of his manner of speech. He's not using the language to get laughs.
